Tropea is situated on one of the most stunning coastlines, no wonder this coast
is called “La Costa Degli Dei”, the Coast of the Gods. Many regard Tropea as Calabria's
jewel, the most picturesque of its towns. Tropea pulls off a rare trick by managing
to be both unspoilt and fashionable, becoming one of the most sought-after places
in Calabria
The city dates back to the 17th century, Tropea is perched on a natural rock formation
cliff, 50 metres above sea level, overlooking the turquoise waters. The old town
is the architectural and historical centre of this region with impressive churches,
mansions, town houses and the church of Santa Maria dell’Isola built on a piece
of land jutting out to sea, you will find that this beautiful city dates back to
the 17th century. Wondering along the narrow streets and piazzas you will find typical
Italian pizzerias, little restaurants, pavement cafés and shops. At dusk soak up
the atmosphere in one of the cafes in the central piazza – the main evening gathering
place during holidays in Tropea.
Most people who come here are attracted to the beaches, with their shimmering seas,
white sands and spectacular views over the Aeolian islands. It's an inspiring place
to top up your tan and was actually named by the Sunday Times as its top beach holiday
destination ahead of more famous locations in Ibiza, France and Sardinia.
